World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. Players control a character avatar within a game world, exploring the landscape, fighting various monsters, completing quests, and interacting with non-player characters (NPCs) or other players.

To enter the game, the player must select a server region and a server, referred to in-game as a realm. Each realm acts as an individual copy of the game world with a specific focus on a particular type of game play such as player verses experience (PvE), player verses player (PvP), role-play (RP), or combinations thereof.

Groups, or communities, of people can form a Guild allowing them to share resources and collaborate on the many challenges that the game has to offer including dungeons and raids.

Rockcliffe Main Campus and Library
Rockcliffe manages two guilds within WOW both of which reside on the Norgannon-US (PvE) realm.

  • Alliance Guild: Nunquam Redono
  • Horde Guild: Nunquam Trado

Educators considering collaborative games as a learning platform can create activities on which the game acts as either a catalyst for learning or as the lab environment in which learning takes place. This may include social skills, leadership, creative problem solving, finance, and market dynamics among others.

Only Rockcliffe Community and Professional members may directly join the Rockcliffe Guilds however anyone can participate in Rockcliffe activities held in World of Warcraft.

Other Destinations

WOW game play should be considered as Moderate. The language included as part of the game narratives is PG however some situations are geared towards 13+ and adult themes. There are parental controls available to limit game time and other components of the game play.

WOW is subscription base requiring a high-speed connection and a fast computer.

Social Communities

Outside of the Rockcliffe Guilds, WOW has hundred of Guilds that people can join for gaming with most focusing on social engagement. Many are end-game focused which include some of the more challenging 40-person raid events.

Economy

WOW has its own economy and recently introduced an opportunity to exchange in-world gold for game time. While additional in-world items are available for sale, there is no ability to exchange in-world currency for cash.

Create Your Own Experience

The opportunities for developing activities for education are numerous however the game itself does not allow players to create unique experiences based on the game elements.

Rockcliffe Guilds

To join one of the Rockcliffe guides you need to have a paid subscription. While WOW permits an open-ended free version allowing players to experience the content up to level 20, WOW limits the ability to trade goods and access to some content.

To start you need a paid subscription.
