Kitely is a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) built on OpenSimulator. OpenSimulator is an open source multi-platform, multi-user 3D application server. Similar to Second Life, it can be used to create a virtual environment (or world) which can be accessed through a variety of clients, on multiple protocols. It also has an optional facility (the Hypergrid) to allow users to visit other OpenSimulator installations across the web from their ‘home’ OpenSimulator installation.
Rockcliffe R&D Campus
Rockcliffe’s virtual campus in Kitely is set-up mainly for prototyping and collaborative research and development. The campus uses Kitely’s dynamic ability to deploy, back-up, and duplicate regions on demand. The main campus includes two regions encompassing:
- Classrooms and Workshop Spaces
- Makerspaces for Professional Member projects
The Rockcliffe Kitely Campus is available to visit at any time however R&D projects are limited to Community and Professional Members only. New registrants to Kitely can get a free account however Kitely’s funding model encourages people to become paying members of Kitely in order to get the full benefits of the environment. Community and Professional members of Rockcliffe do not need a paid Kitely account to access the R&D regions.
Other Destinations
Kitely has hundreds of locations to visit. The Kitely Explore Worldssearch engine also can provide for some great ideas for creating your own unique space in Kitely.
Destinations are rated as either General, Moderate, or Adult. Kitely is generally for adults 18 years and older however unlike Second Life there is no specific age restriction on accessing the environment.
- Under 13 years old you can access regions and search results that have a General maturity rating.
- 13-17 years old, you can access regions with Moderate content.
- 18 years and older, you can access regions with an Adult rating.
Social Communities
Kitely has many social communities that you can join including communities with a focus on role-playing, business, education, non-profit, arts, media, social activism, and many others. Most are open enrollment and friendly to newcomers.
Economy
Kitely has its own economy, and in-world money (Kitely Credits) can be traded for real-world money similar to other real-world currencies.
The virtual environment is free to access, but in-world money (KCs) or a fee ($USD) is required if a user wishes to own in-world land or purchase goods from vendors in-world or the Kitely Marketplace.
The Kitely Market features thousands of products including avatar looks, clothes, building supplies, homes, real estate, and more.
Land in this virtual environment is divided up into regions (also called islands or sims) and parcels (space that is a sub-division of a region space). Kitely residents can build various types of simulations either in a temporary sandbox space (a common area where anyone can build) or by leasing land.
Create Your Own Experience
If you aren’t finding exactly what you are looking for you can create your own experience. Create your own social groups, purchase land, buy objects to create the experience you want or build your own.
Kitely Gateway
Rockcliffe currently does not offer a dedicated Community Gateway in Kitely. New residents are encouraged to use one of the existing Kitely Gateways as part of your registration and then to teleport over to Rockcliffe’s regions once you are online.
It may be beneficial to use Rockcliffe’s Community Gateway in Second Life prior to joining Kitely if you are unsure of what you are doing. Both Kitely and Second Life share about 90% of the features in common. So if you are familiar with how things work in Second Life, Kitely will not be much of a learning curve.
To start you need a free Kitely account.Â
Kitely recommends using your Facebook account to sign-up however you can also use your Twitter credentials or use an old fashioned email address and password.
