Journal of Virtual Studies Masthead Submission

A journal’s masthead is a page dedicated to acknowledging the editors and editorial board that work to create every new issue. It is a summative page of the journal’s goals, its mission, and its process for submission acceptance. However, this masthead is headed by the branding image and name of the journal. As the editors of the journal have moved forward with updates to its message, they have determined that the next update should include an updated title design. This is the current design:

How should the Journal of Virtual Studies represent itself, and it’s updated definition of virtual spaces for education? What clever typology, symbolism or visual representations will define its first issue in 2019? Rockcliffe University Consortium is asking the community to help answer those questions by opening a contest for a new branding image and design which will be the titular heading at the front of each issue’s cover.

Submissions to the contest should meet the following minimum requirements to be considered:

  • Clever typography which spells out the journal’s name
  • A branding image that merges or shares the space of the journal’s name
  • Size should be 2304 X 512 with an image resolution of 300 dpi
  • Maximum File Size 50Mb
  • Acceptable file formats include .psd, .ai, .eps, .cpt, and .cdr
  • Transparent background
  • Two versions of the design, one in color and one in black and white (no grayscale)

All work, including remixing of images or other illustrations, should be owned by the designer, or where open source or paid for images were used, appropriate documentation of copyright should be included. Works whose copyright is ambiguous or misrepresented will be disqualified. Only original works will qualify.

We are looking for one winner, whose work will grace the front page of our journal, our website, and other works published by the Journal of Virtual Studies. Winners will receive $200, promotion on Rockcliffe’s main webpage, our monthly newsletter, Chronicler, as well acknowledgment of the designer included in the masthead, published in every issue of the journal. Upon accepting the award, the designer will provide a perpetual, royalty free licence for the design to Rockcliffe University Consortium, the organization that sponsors and owns the Journal of Virtual Studies. Two honorable mentions will receive promotion in the Rockcliffe website and the newsletter, Chronicler.

Please submit your designs in our JoVS Branding Image Contest online form by no later than January 31, 2019. Individuals may enter the contest with multiple submissions.

Submissions using avatar names will not be accepted.
Please include the font name(s) and whether the font(s) are commercial or custom.
I acknowledge that I am the original owner of any images used as part of the masthead or I have obtained the rights for reuse and remixing (perpetual and royalty free) of any images contained herein.
